10-year-old girl dies two days after fight inside South Carolina classroom

A fifth-grader in South Carolina died after a fight with another student in a classroom.
RaNiya Wright collapsed after the fight Monday at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, and she was airlifted to a nearby hospital where she died two days later, reported WCSC-TV.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday to determine what caused the 10-year-old girl’s death.
Her family said the child had been unresponsive and was in critical condition after arriving at the hospital.
“We are devastated by this news, and we want our communities to keep their thoughts and prayers with the student’s family at this time,” the Colleton County School District posted on its Facebook page, which was deactivated a short time later so the district could focus on “providing the care that our stakeholders need at this time.”
The district issued a statement on its website saying school administrators quickly intervened to end the fight and secure the classroom, and they called emergency medical services to the school.
The sheriff’s office said no weapons were involved in the fight, but no additional details were released about the altercation, which remains under investigation.
The other student was suspended, school officials said, but no additional information was released about the student or the disciplinary action.
