Republicans tend to underestimate COVID risks and Democrats tend to exaggerate them, research shows

Republicans tend to underestimate COVID risks while Democrats tend to exaggerate them, research shows, which explains why members of the two political parties have such different opinions on mask-wearing and school reopenings.

The New York Times did a deep dive Thursday into some of the data surrounding Americans' understanding of COVID-19 and found that misperceptions existed on both sides of the political aisle.

More than one-third of Republican voters, for example, believed the coronavirus couldn't be spread by asymptomatic individuals - which is wrong - while 41 per cent of Democrats believed that more than 50 per cent of individuals who catch COVID needed hospitalization.

In reality, about 1 per cent of COVID patients need to be hospitalized.

Just 10 per cent of Democrats surveyed by Franklin Templeton and Gallup believed that to be the case, while 26 per cent of Republicans chose the right answer.

Researchers found that Democrats are also more likely to believe COVID's death toll among children and young people is higher than it actually is.

Americans under 18 have accounted for just .04 per cent of the U.S. death toll, the Times said.

On the flip side, about a third of Republicans believe that COVID kills fewer people than the seasonal flu or vehicle crashes.

In reality, the coronavirus has killed 15 times more Americans than the flu or vehicles crashes do in an average year.

Jonathan Rothwell, Gallup's principal economist who talked to the Times, explained that these perceptions lead to a difference in real-world behaviors.

Republicans' belief that COVID is less deadly bears out in their resistance to wearing masks.

Democrats belief that COVID is more deadly in young people than is actually true bears out in their resistance to reopen schools.

The Times report pointed out that blue states - California, Oregon, Maryland, New Mexico, Hawaii, Nevada, Massachusetts and New Jersey - have the highest rates of schools that remain closed.

'I think in many ways it’s based on the fact that these voters are misinformed about the risks to young people and they’re misinformed about the risks generally,' Rothwell told paper about the blue state trend.

The research also shows that Americans on both sides of the aisle are willing to change their views as more information is presented.

Gallup found that Republicans took COVID-19 more seriously after being told cases were rising.

And when the American Academy of Pediatrics came out in favor of schools reopening, Democrats viewed the idea more favorably.

  2. Research shows you can further propaganda and "divide" by interpreting results of polling based on lies.
