Tucker Carlson instructs viewers to start telling people 'politely but firmly' to remove their masks outside because there's 'no scientific reason to still be wearing them'

Tucker Carlson said Americans should start asking people to remove their masks outside because science shows there isn't a reason to wear them and wearing them makes other people feel uncomfortable.

During his Tucker Carlson Tonight show Monday night, the Fox News host said the fact that Americans are being told to still wear masks outside amid the COVID-19 pandemic 'should shock us'.

The dictates are simply power grabs by overzealous liberal politicians, he said, and not based in science. Instead, they're chipping away at Americans' freedoms - unchecked.

'The next time you see someone in a mask on the sidewalk or the bike path, don't hesitate. Ask politely but firmly: 'Would you please take off your mask? Science shows there is no reason to wear it. Your mask is making me uncomfortable',' Carlson said.

'We should do that, and we should keep doing it, until wearing a mask outdoors is roughly as socially accepted as lighting a Marlboro in an elevator. It's repulsive. Don't do it around other people. That's the message we should send because it's true.'

His comments come as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are expected to issue new guidelines Tuesday on mask-wearing: The guidance could say fully vaccinated people can stop wearing masks outside, sources have told CNN.

The guidance is expected as the share of Americans who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 approaches 30 percent, and warmer begins to spread across the nation.

He suggested that liberals have become 'aggressors' for pushing for, or enforcing, mask wearing across the country amid the pandemic.

When Joe Biden took office in January, the president urged Americans to wear masks for the next 100 days to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Carlson said Democrats would applaud if someone burned an American flag in public but would be upset if they burned masks.

'If you decide to burn an American flag in a public park tomorrow, how would they respond to that? Well, of course, they would applaud. That's your First Amendment right. You'd be fighting the tyranny of the people who created this horrifying country.

'How, by contrast, would they respond if you burned a pile of surgical masks in a public park tomorrow? They probably wouldn't like it. But that's your right too.'

He argued that 'power-drunk politicians' had wrecked the country by enforcing mask wearing and claims that such mandates has actually put people at risk, including children.

'There's no scientific justification for any of it. Children are not at meaningful risk from COVID. They never have been. Adults who've been vaccinated or naturally infected - and that's a huge percentage of the American population - aren't either,' he said.

'If you've got high levels of antibodies in your system, you're almost certainly safe. Those who don't have antibodies can get the shot. Every American who wants the vaccine can get one.

'At this point, there is no scientific justification for any mask mandate, anywhere. It's that simple. The idea that people are being told, being forced, to wear masks outside should shock us.'

He claimed children being made to wear masks at school was akin to child abuse.

'Your response when you see children wearing masks as they play should be no different than your response to seeing someone beat a child in Walmart: call the police immediately. Contact child protective services. Keep calling until someone arrives,' he said.

'What you're seeing is abuse. It's child abuse, and you're morally obligated to try to prevent it. If it's your own children being abused, act accordingly.'

Some conservatives, including radio host Erick Erikson, appeared to disagree with Carlson, tweeting: 'Conservatives don't get in other people's faces and tell them how to raise their kids. That's what the other side does and I'm not on that side and so won't behave that way.'

Elsewhere in his show, Carlson pointed to recent comments made by Dr Anthony Fauci regarding whether masks were still needed outside.

Carlson claimed Fauci has been forced to concede that there wasn't a risk of mass transmission of COVID-19 outdoors.

Fauci, in an interview with ABC on Sunday, had said he believed new mask guidance from the CDC was imminent.

'What I believe you're going to be hearing, what the country is going to be hearing soon, is updated guidelines from the CDC,' Fauci said.

'The CDC is a science-based organization. They don't want to make any guidelines unless they look at the data and the data backs it up.

'I think it's pretty common sense now that outdoor risk is really, really quite low, particularly - I mean, if you are a vaccinated person, wearing a mask outdoors, I mean, obviously, the risk is minuscule.'

The CDC is expected to unveil new guidance on outdoor mask-wearing for unvaccinated people on Tuesday, ahead of a planned speech by President Biden later in the day on the state of the pandemic response.

Currently, the CDC guidance recommends people wear cloth face coverings 'in public settings when around people outside their household, especially when social distancing measures are difficult to maintain'.

Carlson went on to point out how Vice President Kamala Harris still wears a mask outside and social distances even though she is fully vaccinated.

The CDC updated its guidance last month to say fully vaccinated people could gather indoors without wearing a mask or remaining six feet apart with others who have been fully vaccinated.

Fully vaccinated people can also gather inside with unvaccinated people from another household without masks or social distancing if that person, or people they live with, does not have an increase risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Carlson accused Harris of carrying out a 'charade' that doesn't have anything to do with science or public health, and questioned why Americans had to follow suit.

'We let power-drunk politicians wreck our country in exchange for promising to protect us from a virus that 99 percent of us would have survived anyway. What were we thinking?' he said.

'Masks have always been incompatible with a free society. We used to know that. Masks strip people of their identity as individuals. Mask transform people from citizens into drones. They isolate us. They alienate us. They shut us off from one another. They prevent intimacy and human contact.

'If I can't see your face, I can't know you. Masks are for the guilty. They're signifiers of shame and submission.

'Until recently, many jurisdictions had laws against wearing masks in public. Only Klansmen and armed robbers wore masks. The rest of us showed our faces. We were free people.'

Mask wearing has been a controversial issue throughout the pandemic with health authorities changing their guidance repeatedly on who should wear masks and when to wear them.

Most states issued their own mask orders, which numerous studies linked to subsequent decreases in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

Some states, including Florida and South Dakota, never had any state-wide mask mandates.

As the vaccination efforts continue nationwide, real world data has increasingly suggested that fully vaccinated people are unlikely to spread the virus, and are likely protected from catching it and becoming ill.

White House officials said a focus in the coming weeks for the Biden administration will be on easing guidance for vaccinated people.
