We talk about redlining like it’s a thing of the past, but like most of America’s racist systems it hasn’t really gone away—it’s just simply evolved. A Black homeowner in Indianapolis has filed a discrimination complaint after an appraisal on her house increased by $100,000.

All she had to do was remove all traces of her Black identity from her home.

According to Fox 59, Carlette Duffy wanted to get her house appraised last year, hoping that she could use the equity to purchase her grandparents’ home nearby. Duffy thought something was up after she received two appraisals that were basically the same price she paid for the home in 2017. “When I challenged it, it came back that the appraiser said they’re not changing it,” Duffy said.

After hearing Amy Nelson, director of the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI), give a speech about housing discrimination that heavily referenced a New York Times article on the subject, Duffy decided to conduct a test.

“I decided to do exactly what was done in the article,” Duffy told Fox 59. “I took down every photo of my family from my house. … I took every piece of ethnic artwork out, so any African artwork, I took it out. I displayed my degrees, I removed certain books.” Duffy also had one of her white friends sit in on the third appraisal, and she didn’t declare her race to the appraisers at any point during the process.

After removing all traces of her Blackness, her appraisal magically doubled to over $100,000 more than she was initially offered. “I get choked up even thinking about it now because I was so excited and so happy, and then I was so angry that I had to go through all of that just to be treated fairly,” Duffy told the news outlet.

The discrimination complaint filed by Duffy and the FHCCI asks the Department of Justice to investigate the discrepancies between the appraisals. Nelson told the news outlet that one point of contention in the complaint is that the appraiser used homes in a Black neighborhood a mile from Duffy’s home as opposed to similar homes in her neighborhood when pulling comparable sales.

“Whether or not those comps were fairly selected is something that is the basis of the complaints that we have filed,” Nelson said.

Duffy was able to buy her grandparents’ home with the third appraisal, but it’s fucking sad she had to erase all traces of her Blackness in her home to do so. If white people are so pressed about being called racist, then stop perpetuating racist systems. It’s really that easy.

  1. Good for her, I hope they nail the lowballers. All that should matter is the condition of the home and the neighborhood, everything else can and probably will be changed.

  2. That's about right. The truth is there are whites that distrust or simply don't want to live near blacks and will pay a premium to avoid that. You can't legislate that. The sentiment has only disappeared underground. The media's portrayal of the BLM protests last year only confirmed and accelerated that feeling.

  3. All you have to do is look at the neighborhood where the 16 black girl attempted to stab two other black girls before being shot by the police. That was a nice middle class neighborhood. Newish homes, kept lawns etc. Yet the behavior was ghetto with even the knife welder's father tried to kick one of the victims when she had fallen to the ground. White people don't want to live around this sort of behavior and they will pay a premium to live with people where knife fights aren't something that every kid goes through. Or so some of the race hustlers claimed after the incident.

  4. "If white people are so pressed about being called racist, then stop perpetuating racist systems." If black people are so pressed about discrimination, then stop glorifying "ghetto" attitudes and behavior.

  5. the lowballers are really stupid. If they give a low appraisal then you will get blacks moving in. A high appraisal will be most likely bring in whites or asians. So with the low appraisal they are helping blacks take over another white neighborhood so they can see jungle and immature behaviors from the ghetto transplants. I am not even sure why a appraisal company would do that. They make the same money regardless what they say it's worth. They have no control or say over who puts bids on the property or who is chosen to buy it if more than one is interested in it. They have no stake in that neighborhood unless the appraiser lives in the area. The white people in the neighborhood should be suing them too.

  7. This story just shows how dumb leftist black people are. Anyone in real estate knows that your house will sell for higher if you remove most personal items, regardless of whether they are showing black, white or other ethnicity. Put up confederate flags and watch the appraisal go low again, it has nothing to do with "blackness". If you want to claim this is a scientific test, have her remove anything she calls art and leave up the pictures of her black family, the appraisal would go up again. She also openly says she displayed her degrees, what does that have to do with "blackness" or "whiteness." Obviously those degrees didn't mean much since she is to dumb to understand the science of control variables. Funny how the left is so convinced that racism is everywhere, but they still have to resort to propaganda hit pieces like this, which violate obvious principles of statistical science.

  8. So, the real estate agents(REA) you were hiring to deal with your property were all "white?" Were they WASP white or Jewish white? Did you think to use a REA of color? REAs love to make money that they don't have to work for ... maybe they weren't shadow-Redlining, perhaps they were just low-balling, or setting up some kickback scheme. Either way, I hope you widen their buttholes.
