If the grid goes down, thousands will die within one week. If the grid stays down, untold millions will die within one month. No food deliveries, no electricity, no gasoline, no drug prescriptions, no anything.
There are numerous massive electronic assemblies that comprise the national grid, for which there are no spare parts available. With the grid down, it would be a very long time before they could be available.
A massive Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), whether generated by a solar storm, or a man-made military attack, the end result will be the same.
Nobody knows how computers work, or electricity for that matter but they have allowed the very lives to become dependent on them.
